Angular Sizes of Faint Field Disk Galaxies: Intrinsic Luminosity Evolution
نویسندگان
چکیده
In order to explain the small scale-lengths detected in the recent deep field observations performed from large ground-based telescopes and from the Hubble Space Telescope, we investigate the predictions at high redshifts for disk galaxies that formed by infall. Changes with redshift in the observed properties of field galaxies are directly related to the evolution of the disks and of the stellar populations. We see that changes in the rest frame luminosity of a galaxy induce smaller values of half-light radii than are predicted assuming no evolution. Comparisons are presented with two observed samples from Mutz et al. (1994) and Smail et al. (1995). Subject headings: Galaxy Evolution – Galaxy Scale-lengths

A Search for Low Surface Brightness Structure around Compact Narrow Emission Line Galaxies
As the most extreme members of the rapidly evolving faint blue galaxy population at intermediate redshift, the compact narrow emission line galaxies (CNELGs) are intrinsically luminous ( 22PMBP 18) with narrow emission line widths (30 km s 1P P125 km s ). Their nature is heavily debated: they may be low-mass starbursting galaxies that will fade to present-day dwarf galaxies or bursts of star fo...
متن کاملNear-Infrared bulge-disk correlations of lenticular galaxies
We consider the luminosity and environmental dependence of structural parameters of lenticular galaxies in the near-infrared K band. Using a two-dimensional galaxy image decomposition technique, we extract bulge and disk structural parameters for a sample of 36 lenticular galaxies observed by us in the K band. By combining data from the literature for field and cluster lenticulars with our data...
متن کاملThe size distribution of galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey
We use a complete sample of about 140,000 galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) to study the size distribution of galaxies and its dependence on their luminosity, stellar mass, and morphological type. The large SDSS database provides statistics of unprecedented accuracy. For each type of galaxy, the size distribution at given luminosity (or stellar mass) is well described by a log-n...

Recent observations have revealed a population of blue galaxies at intermediate redshift with a space density well in excess of expectations from the local luminosity function and standard cosmology. The colors and luminosities of these faint blue galaxies are similar to nearby low surface-brightness (LSB) galaxies. Such galaxies are severely underrepresented in surveys used to de ne the local ...
متن کاملThe Contribution of Late-type/Irregulars to the Faint Galaxy Counts from HST Medium Deep Survey Images
We present a complete morphologically classified sample of 144 faint field galaxies from the HST Medium Deep Survey with 20.0 ≤ mI < 22.0 mag. We compare the global properties of the ellipticals, early and late-type spirals, and find a non-negligible fraction (13/144) of compact blue [(V − I) ≤ 1.0 mag] systems with r1/4-profiles. We give the differential galaxy number counts for ellipticals an...
